Lobuche Peak climbing (6119m / 20,075ft)

Trip Overview

There exist two distinct summit to Lobuche peak: Lobuche east ( 6119m/ 20,075ft ) and Lobuche west ( 6145m/ 20161ft ). Although they are connected by a continuous ridge there is a sharp gap and a considerable distance between them. The trekking peak permit is for the east peak, whilst Lobuche west, well seen at the head of the Lobuche glacier, requires and expedition permit. Lobuche is also spelt Lobuche on some maps.

Lobuche peak is an attractive summit, offering a variety of existing routes and wide scope for new lines. Seen from near Pheriche, the dark triangle of its rocky east face rises above the moraines of the Khumbu Glacier to and icy skyline. This skyline forms the south ridges, the junction of the east faces with the glaciated south west face and the line of the normal route of ascent. This in turn leads to the summit ridge running north west from the top of the east faces through several small summit to the east peak.

  3. Flight to Lukla (2860m) and Trek to Phuiyan (2796m), walk 4-5 hrs. On this day, you fly to Lukla from Kathmandu. Just to remind you, the airstrip where you will find yourself in the early morning at Lukla was built by Sir Edmund Hillary and his friend. The expedition route that you will be walking along with our experienced trekking porters and guide to Mera is a welcome escape from the usually much crowded trail that leads one to the Everest Base Camp. After having your lunch at Surkhe, you will find yourself walking through many traditional villages till you arrive at the vicinity of Phuiyan, the place for your first night camp.
  4. Trek to Pangkogma (2846m), walk approx 6 hrs. After crossing the Poyan Khola, you find yourself turning off the main trekking route coming up from the south, and joining an older route. This route takes you up to a steep ridge-line from where you can view the pristine mountainous river, the Khare Khola. As you descend the other side of the ridge, you find yourself walking along the hillside before you start to climb a steady trail that leads you to an attractive farming and trading village called Pangkongma (2846 m). As soon as you reach to the village, to your surprise, you will find friendly villagers waiting for you to welcome to their place. You then spend several pleasant hours with them mostly warming yourself in front of an open fire. The climate, food, Sherpa people, sky and air around you envelop you to your great surprise and pleasure.

From there, you start walking through thick rhododendron forest and bamboo hedges leading up to the Pangkongma La Pass (3140m). From the Pass, you can have some excellent views of the south face of Mera. You will be gazing on twin peaks of Mera and its neighbor Naulekh. Finally, you reach at the Honku valley, the place for yet another interesting campfire night.
  7. Trek to Chunbu Kharka (4,200m). From Honku valley, you start to climb the side of a ridge and find yourself gradually coming out of the last traces of rhododendron forest. You then find yourself walking through a rugged terrain, a high point of grazing area. As soon as you reach to a small pass, you get some excellent views of Kangchenjunga and Jannu mountains looking at you from the east. You reach Chunbu Kharka and spend a campfire night.
  8. Trek to Kote (3490m), walk approx 06 hrs. This part of your route takes you through a forest mixed of juniper, rhododendron and firs, and walking through the forest itself becomes one of the most beautiful experiences of your trip. As you reach to Kote, you enjoy some great views of Mera and Hinku valley.
  9. Trek to Tangnang (4140m) walk approx 5- 6 hrs. This route to Tangnang takes you steadily up through open pasture fields, used for the summer grazing of yaks brought up from the lower valleys. As you keep on walking this route, you will find the valley swinging eastwards into a new array of peaks. Finally, you reach at Thagnak from where you view the Mera glacier in the horizon.
  10. Acclimatization Day. We will spend a day at Thagnak in order to acclimatize and adjust to the thinning air. It is strongly advised that you spend an extra day here. Moreover, this trekking spot has a superb setting as it is surrounded by stunning peaks including Peak 43 (6,769m). There is a huge moraine in the north of Thagnak. It is there you will find a beautiful glacial lake known as Sabai Tsho.
  11. Trek to Mera Base Camp (4940m), walk approx 4-5 hrs. From Thagnak, you start walking through sideways of the moraine of Dig Glacier and Dig Kharka. This particular route offers you some great spectacular views of Charpate Himal. The trail keeps on climbing through moraines towards the south of the Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers, and then finally you start to climb a steep hill that leads you to Khare (5,099 m).
  12. Acclimatization day. This is another important acclimatization day (at 5,300m) for you as you have to make a final preparation for the climb. A three-hour ascending from here leads you to Mera La (5,415m) Pass. Usually during Nov-April, this pass remains covered with snow. This pass offers some excellent spectacular views of the mountains. As you descend about 100m down the Hongu side, you find yourself enjoying at a night camp in the base camp (5,300m) in the moraine below the ice.
  13. Spare day for Summit. Mostly the weather condition in the Himalayas remains unpredictable, therefore it is advised you to spare this day for a good rest. Moreover, this free day enables you to adjust yourself with the environment. You can enjoy the atmosphere depending on the condition of the weather.
  14. Trek to High Camp, walk approx 5-6 hrs. This part of the route takes you up to the highest camp located at about 5,800m on the Northern slopes of the upper mountain. You will be walking up for 4 hours and then setting up a high camp. You make preparation for the next day to get to the summit. The camp is located at an excellent point from where you can have some great mountain views.
  15. Summit to the Mera Peak and back to the base camp, approx 08 hrs walk. This is probably the most important and toughest day in any mountaineering trip in this world. You find yourself waking up in the dawn with a high esteem and determination to make the summit of the peak a grand success. Then within a few hours, you find yourself climbing up the centre of the open snowfields. It is very necessary that you avoid crevasses. The route then swings towards the south-east, skirting below and to the east of the left-hand ridge before turning back rightwards towards the main summit ridge of Mera. It is the very point that you have dreamt to be in your life. From the summit, you can see great spectacular mountain views, including Mt. Everest (8848 m), Mt. Kanchanjunga (8586 m), Mt. Lhotse(8516 m), Mt. Makalau(8485 m ) and more other mountains having over 7000m height.
  16. Trek to Kote, walk approx 06 hrs. On this day, you find yourself retracing the trail back to Kote. You will spend a night in a camp set near by the river.
  17. Trek to Cetera (4190m), walk approx 06 hrs You will follow another new route back to Lukla that stays high on the open hillside. Rather than winding through the previous one, you will be walking down and through a quicker return. This trial provides you some fantastic views of the backside of Mera, a differently beautiful angle.
  18. Trek to Lukla, walk approx 07 hrs This trail takes you through a series of rises and high plateau till the windy craggy Zatrawa La (4,580m), the gateway to the Dudh Kosi valley and the trail to Lukla, from where we look back to the Hinku wilderness for the last time. The south face of the peak that you climbed just a couple of days ago beautifully surprises you.
